Hello to a New School Year - September 2017
Winter Concert - December 2016
Gingerbread Jamboree - December 2016
ROBOTICS - December 2016
The first graders worked on a Robotics Lego project. I was very impressed with both their ability to problem-solve and show teamwork!
Happy Halloween - October 2016
Halloween fell on a Monday this year, but this group of first graders was ready for learning AND fun! We had a great time getting dressed up, showing off our costumes during the parade, and learning with Halloween themes all day long. Happy Halloween from Mrs. Verdegan's Fabulous First Graders!
october 2016 - Barkhausen Field Trip
We had an amazing day learning together on our Barkhausen field trip. The students had a great time using their five senses on our nature walk (even tasting trees) and digging for pond critters!
September 2016
The first graders worked hard to earn Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day for following expectations in September. Way to go!
September 2016 - A NEw Year!
A new year of first grade has gotten off to a great start! We have been busy learning what readers do as they build good habits. The students brought in favorite books from home to understand that readers reread books they love and also talk about books. When we talk about books, it helps us to learn new things and get excited about new books!
April 2016 - Robotics
We spent the afternoon working with a robotics project this week. Mrs. Rank and I were very impressed with not only the students' perseverance in solving problems they encountered, but also the teamwork they demonstrated with their partners. Way to go, first graders!
April 2016 - Sock Hop
Students danced up a storm at our annual Sock Hop! We had a great time celebrating together!
March 2016 - Leprechaun traps
The students worked in groups to design and build a leprechaun trap. Look out leprechauns!
March 2016 - Scientific Method
We had fun exploring the scientific method the past few weeks!
March 2016 - Interest FAir
Congratulations to our Interest Fair participants!
March 2016 - Celebrating Learning!
In math this week, the first graders learned about graphing by surveying their classmates for data, creating a graph, and analyzing the results. We also celebrated Read Across America Day with several activities including "Got Books, Let's Read." The entire school went out into the hallways and celebrated reading together.
February 2016 - World Read Aloud Day
A first grader's big sister came to read to our class for World Read Aloud Day!
January 2016 - 100th day of School
In honor of the 100th day of school, we celebrated with different projects such as building a structure using 100 cups, writing about what we want to do by the time we turn 100, and making an art project using 100 dots. It was a great day celebrating - we are 100 days smarter!
We used an aging app to see a glimpse of our future selves!
January 2016 - The Great Cookie Dig
We learned about the comprehension strategy of questioning by reading a book about fossils. The students were excited about their new learning, so we decided to have a mini-unit about it in science as well. We read from additional resources and learned about how fossil hunters find and remove fossils from the ground when they are discovered. We pretended to be fossil hunters using our "tools" (a toothpick) to dig "fossils" (chocolate chips) out of the ground (a cookie). Since they worked so hard removing the fossils, they were rewarded with eating the cookies! :)
December 2015 - Our Classroom Community
As we concluded our learning about communities and maps, each first grade class created their own community in the hallway. We connected all five communities together, so it was quite the display as it stretched down the entire first grade hallway!
December 2015 - We are Authors!
As we completed our first unit of writing, the students were excited to publish a favorite narrative. We celebrated the publishing by taking time to share our stories with each other. They are now displayed outside our classroom. Stop by and check them out!
November 2015 - Swimming Incentive
We had a great time at our swimming incentive! The students were excited to earn this incentive for following the Timbertail Way in October. Way to go, first graders
October 2015 - Barkhausen Field Trip
Last week, we spent the day on an amazing field trip to Barkhausen! The students were able to explore the pond in the morning and found critters such as backswimmers, frogs, ducks, and many more. Some were so small, we had to use a microscope to see them! In the afternoon, we went on a nature walk through the forest. We saw animal homes, went on a scavenger hunt, and even tasted some trees! It was a fantastic day of hands-on learning to end our first science unit of first grade!
October 2015 - Field Day!
As an incentive for following expectations well in September, our class participated in a Field Day. It included games, relays, and free time on the "big kid" playground. We had a fantastic afternoon celebrating the good choices we have been making since the school year began! Way to go, first graders!
September 2015 - 1st Graders Read!
We spent time during the first week of school learning about how readers build good habits. We talked about how readers are respectful of one another by reading quietly and also how readers choose books that are interesting. Here are my fabulous first graders showing what they have learned about being a reader!
September 2015 - A New Year!
Welcome to first grade! We are going to have an amazing year!
